Best Buy Sells Man A Brick Instead of A Macbook Pro
Best Buy has done it again. Just like a previous story, a customer bought a computer, took it home and found a brick inside the box instead of a Macbook Pro. Just like the other story, Best Buy won’t do a thing about it and pawns the problem off to Apple. It looks like Best Buy has a difficult time learning lessons.
I’ll say it again: if you buy an expensive item at Best Buy, open the box right there in the store and make sure you are getting what you pay for. It could save you a huge headache.
Gaming Again
My 17″ Macbook Pro finally arrived and I now have it setup the way I like it. It has been a long wait, but I can now get back to gaming. I decided to start with Lord of the Rings Online. Since LOTRO requires the Windows operating system, I had to setup a dual boot configuration on the Macbook Pro. I decided to install Windows XP, even though it won’t use all 4GB of RAM that is available to the machine. The game runs great on high settings at 1920×1200, even though the 9600GT 512MB video card isn’t all that great of a card these days.
I have a level 37 Champion on the Windfola server, but I decided to start fresh, so I rolled up a human Guardian that I named Strongg. I wanted to try out a class in the game that I had not played yet and Guardian was one of them. Humans start in the Archet area, so my game introduction had me escaping from a cell and then helping a Ranger named Amdir to rescue some kidnapped hobbits.
Once the introduction is complete, I found myself in the town of Archet, eager to find some quests and get to work. I didn’t have far to go. Amdir was wounded in the battle, so I had to help him with defense of the town. The first few are you typical newbie quests that have you go out and kill wolves and boars so that the town’s sheep are kept safe. Once those are done, I was sent to a hunter’s lodge where some things needed to be done. Seeing this lodge brought pangs of nostalgia to my heart because the lodge reminded me of my beloved Everquest’s Surefall Glade and the lodge that can be found there.
One of the farmers outside of Archet had a boar problem that he wanted me to help him with. A boar named Old Bloodtusk needed to be killed. I remembered this boar from the time that LOTRO first went live. There was a line of people waiting to kill this boar and each time he appeared it was a general free-for-all contest. This time, however, there was not another player in sight and he was waiting for me when I arrived.
After running several other quests, none of which were very challenging, I came to the last quest in the “game introduction” line. Brigands were attacking Archet and I had to help Amdir defend it. The town was in flames when I arrived and it was filled with battle. I worked my way through the town, finally arriving at the final showdown, which culminated in a fight with Eogan, a servant of Angmar who was responsible for all the problems in the area. I dispatched him with ease and ended the quest line.
Lenovo S10 Impressions
Yes, it has been awhile since my last post. I have been working an insane amount of hours lately and that has not left much time or energy for writing. I work in the IT department of a casino (I won’t say which one), and we have been working night and day to get an expansion open. Now that it has opened, I hope to return to the realm of normal life again, although I think most people would be surprised at just how hard all casino employees work.
My last post mentioned that I had purchased a Lenovo S10 netbook computer. I have been using it has my main machine at home and I can say that it was a very worthy purchase. Now, you may ask why would I use a 10″ netbook as my main computer. Well, I decided to sell my Alienware M17 gaming laptop and go back to a 17″ Macbook Pro. The Macbook Pro does not have nearly the same graphics card power as the M17, but I really missed using OS X. Plus, with the hours I have been working, my gaming time has dwindled drastically.
The Lenovo netbook is what made me realize I missed OS X. You see, it is possible to install OS X onto the S10 and that is exactly what I did. I am now dual booting Windows XP and Mac OS X. Installing the Mac operating system on a machine like this is not the easiest thing to do, but when you get it completed, it runs perfectly fine. All the hardware works well. The only exception to that is the built-in ethernet card. It currently does not work, but the built-in wi-fi does, so it is not much of a problem. I started with this guide from the Lenovo S10 forums.
The Lenovo S10 uses a 1.6ghz Atom processor. Its intended use is light tasks and that is exactly it shines at. I can browse the web, check email, view online video, play music, and other standard things. It can’t view high definition video. It just does not have the raw power necessary to do so. I don’t find this much of a limitation as I don’t think most people get a 10″ netbook with the intention of watching high definition video. Non-HD content plays fine, but it does push the processor. If I watch a YouTube video or watch Twit Live, the CPU utilization stays at 75%.
I only have one complaint about it and that is the placement of the right-hand “shift” key. It is not in the standard position and I find myself pressing the “enter” key most of the time by mistake. It is awkward but I can live with it. All-in-all, the Lenovo S10 is a great little machine.
My 17″ Macbook Pro won’t ship until February 26th, so I will get even more use out of the S10. I wouldn’t recommend it for every day use, but for light use and travel, it can’t be beat.
